Obituary for Joseph F. Powell

Joseph F. Powell, 82, of New Martinsville, WV died Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at his home.

Joe was born February 18, 1933 in New Martinsville, WV son of the late Russell and Amy (Hamilton) Powell.

He was a retired employee of WV DHHR, former proofreader for Wheeling Newspapers, a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Korean Conflict, secretary for many years for Town & Country Days Board of Directors, volunteered with Helping Hands Food Pantry, served on various committees and civic organizations, helped generate a lot of free publicity for different groups, enjoyed gospel music, game shows, crossword puzzles and was an avid reader and active member of New Martinsville United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Edith Rottman and Helen Hootman and four brothers, an infant brother, Norman Powell, Kenneth Powell and Edward Powell.

Surviving are his wife of fifty-four years, Barbara (Johnson) Powell; two daughters, Jacqueline (David) Auenson of Martinez, GA and Jennifer Powell of Morgantown, WV; foster-son, Chester (Amber) Waybright of Bakersfield, CA; brother, Roger “Jim” Powell of New Martinsville, WV; four grandchildren, Jessica (Dan) Miller, Joseph Powell, David Waybright and Adam Waybright.

Friends received 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Thursday, July 16, 2015 at Jarvis-Williams Funeral Home, 1224 S Bridge St., New Martinsville. Funeral service 11 a.m., Friday, July 17, 2015 at New Martinsville United Methodist Church with Pastor Sharletta Green officiating.

Interment to follow in Northview Cemetery in New Martinsville, WV.
