Obituary for Eleanor Mae Leu (Smith)

Eleanor Mae Smith Clark Leu, 90, of New Martinsville, WV passed away on Wednesday, August 16, 2017.

Eleanor was born November 16, 1926 in New Martinsville, WV; daughter of the late Jessie Belle ‘Biddy’ and Charles W. “Pete” Smith

Eleanor was a 1945 graduate of Magnolia High School where she took great pride in being active in her school as a class officer and cheerleader. She remained a devoted fan of Magnolia’s Big Blue Athletic Teams throughout her life and was always at the front of the line when it was time to organize an event or reunion or play a game whether it was a backyard volleyball game or as part of a softball or bowling league. Eleanor had many friendships with not only the Magnolia coaches and officials but many from surrounding areas always positive, especially the local refs like, Nim Priest, Mike Tusic, Eddie Taylor, Bill Toninni, Bruce Crawford, and Chuck Galloway. She always supported local talents – loved those old minstrel days, a dedicated reader of the Wetzel Chronicle and regular at Witschey’s.

She loved to shop, as she referred to it “turning tags”, but even more she loved to sell. She loved her store - aptly named “Eleanor’s where there’s something nice for everyone”. Other employment venues included years as a telephone operator, restaurant operator, and Admissions clerk with Wetzel County Hospital. Eleanor was a member of the First Baptist Church of New Martinsville and other activities included time involved organizing a widow/widower’s group called “Friends”, time with the Wetzel County Democratic Women, a local Canasta Club, and Women of the Moose. Her precious friends crossed county lines as well as state lines and they were all special to her.

In addition to her parents, Eleanor or “Orie” as she was affectionately known by her siblings was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond “Bud” Leu; older sister, Eileen Smith Sommer, and two younger brothers, Dale W. “Bud” Smith and Robert W. “Popcorn” Smith.

Surviving are the blessed seven Clark daughters and one son. Linda Keller Hedrick (Al), Barbara Bosley (Dave), Deborah Swords Tyler, Rebecca Deffenbaugh Stoker Honrath (Pat), Patricia “Patty” Snider (Earl) Jane Schlegel, Lisa “Chrissy” Henger (Gordon), and Doyne B. “Barney” Clark (Colleen). Biological grandkids number 22 with 34 great grandchildren. Surviving sister is Madge E. Barnes of New Martinsville – who is also a life-long fan of Magnolia Big Blue Athletics. A special mention for her long-time friend, Mr. Bud Light, who was very attentive and caring; a welcome part of all family events for the past 17 years.

Friends received 2-8 p.m., Friday, August 18, 2017 at the Jarvis-Williams Funeral Home, 1224 S Bridge St, New Martinsville, where friends will be received from noon until time of service at 2 p.m., Saturday, August 19, 2017 with Pastor Don Biram officiating.

Interment to follow in Northview Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made, in Eleanor’s name, to Magnolia High School Athletic Boosters, 601 Maple Ave., New Martinsville, WV 26155.
